Tivoli Road Bakery is the culmination of years of hospitality experience for husband and wife team, and owners, Michael and Pippa James.
Michael grew up in Penzance in West Cornwall in the UK. After completing his chef’s training he moved to London to work for Tom Aikens’ two Michelin Star Pied à Terre. It was here, over the pass and in the throes of service, he met Pippa. Over time and whilst in positions at Villandry food store and Isola he realised that his passion lay in the fine detail of pastry work and then in bread making.
After eight years living together in London, Michael and Pippa returned to Pippa’s home in Australia where Michael worked at the renowned Bourke St Bakery in Sydney. A subsequent move to Melbourne then saw Michael work at Baker D Chirico whilst Pippa held senior positions at the likes of Vue de monde and Cutler & Co. When MoVida Aqui opened Michael was head pastry chef/baker before taking on a key role in the opening of MoVida Bakery at 3 Tivoli Road in April 2012. Just over a year later Pippa and Michael purchased the bakery and reopened as Tivoli Road.
Tivoli Road is a labour of love which sees Michael able to focus on his commitment to producing handmade artisan goods to the highest standard possible whilst Pippa handles administration, wholesale and development as well as buzzing around the shop floor and doing the early starts for Farmers markets.
In 2017 Michael and Pippa collaborated to produce their first book. ‘The Tivoli Road Baker’ is a beautiful collection of recipes and stories that welcomes the reader into their world of artisan breads, delectable pastries and savoury delights.
